Three hundred and forty million children in Sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. This means they can’t study after dark, are less likely to graduate, and get jobs that can help pull their families out of poverty. And that’s especially true for girls.
At Little Sun, we believe that education is one of the most empowering forces in the world. This fall, just in time for the new school year, we are on a mission to bring solar lamps to 5,000 children in rural Africa so they can learn their lessons, stay in school, and break down barriers to opportunity.

Children in Sub-Saharan Africa don’t always have easy lives. But they have big dreams. In the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to girls like Marjani from Ethiopia who dream of becoming doctors to cure people from their communities who get sick with Malaria and boys like Edige from Tanzania who want to be engineers to help bring electricity to their villages.
The Little Sun lamp helps make these dreams come true. Every Little Sun lamp provides a student with 1,200 additional study hours after dark so they can imagine a bright future.
A LITTLE LIGHT GOES A LONG WAY
A simple solar light can have a big impact on a child’s life. It helps students get rid of toxic smoke from burning coal or wood for light. It saves their parents up to 20% of the household’s income – money that can be spent on food, clothes, and school supplies for their children. It makes girls walking home from school feel safer by giving them light in the dark. And it’s free: The Little Sun lamp harvests the power of the sun and stores it so that children can use it every night.
